| Topic: New Tools of the Trade
|
Web 2.0, social networking applications, blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, facetted searching, semantic linking and digital documents are just some of the new developments that are rapidly changing the systems environment in libraries and what users expect from the systems that they use. To respond to these challenges, systems librarians and developers need to "re-tool": they need to discover and master new ways of developing and applying informatics to solve information problems. The ELAG 2009 Conference is calling for presentations on new tools including:
- innovative software, applications and environments
- emerging formats, protocols and standards or new ways of applying existing standards
- new procedures and techniques

The ELAG (European Library Automation Group) Conference is Europe's premier conference for library and information management technology. For more than twenty-five years, ELAG has provided a unique opportunity for European library systems professionals to discuss current problems and future challenges, and to exchange best practices. ELAG participants include more than 450 members in 27 countries all over Europe. The meetings aim at in depth discussions of particular library automation topics and at the promotion of informal exchange of ideas and experience. Topics of past conferences have included digital libraries, library portals, institutional repositories, web services, digital preservation and open source software. The topics covered are technical and meant for participants with an appropriate technical background.
An ELAG conference consists of three parts :
• presentations in a plenary session related to the main theme of the seminar
• workshops that run in parallel and that provide an opportunity for small groups of participants to discuss one issue in depth
• lightning talks by of no more than 5 minutes on specific topics or very current developments
Participants sign up for one workshop, and may volunteer to give lightning talks.
The conferences are informal and only a modest fee is charged (€60 for ELAG2009). All delegates are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses.
